The core objective in Tongits is to accumulate the highest score by winning tricks, collecting valuable cards, and employing strategic resource management. Success hinges on balancing risk and reward to outwit competitors.

The primary goal is to reduce your unmatched cards, known as deadwood, through forming melds—either sets of identical cards or runs of consecutive cards within the same suit. Victory can be achieved by "Tongits"—melding all cards and emptying your hand—forcing opponents to fold, or having the lowest deadwood points when the deck is depleted.

The game setup involves three players with a standard 52-card deck. The dealer is selected randomly at the outset and then rotates clockwise after each round. Dealings consist of 12 cards for the dealer and 11 for each opponent, with remaining cards forming a draw pile and one card placed face-up as the discard pile.

Card rankings are straightforward: aces are low (A-2-3 are valid sequences, but Q-K-A is not), numbered cards hold their face values, and face cards (J, Q, K) are valued at ten points each.

Gameplay proceeds with the player to the left of the dealer starting first. During their turn, each player must draw a card (either from the discard pile or from the draw pile), optionally form melds, and then discard one card to conclude their turn.

Special moves include "Sagasa," which allows players to challenge a recently discarded card if they can immediately add it to an exposed meld, and "Burn," a preventive move where if an opponent blocks a required draw, the player must draw from the deck on their next turn.

Winning conditions vary: a player can achieve an instant win by "Tongits," melding all their cards in one move; the round also ends when there are no more cards in the draw pile; alternatively, players may declare a "Fight" if they believe they hold the lowest deadwood score, prompting all players to compare their unmatched points.

The scoring system awards full bets to a "Tongits" win, rewards the lowest deadwood in a "Fight," and accounts for fold losses when a player withdraws. Players who cannot play or are trapped automatically lose. Additional rules permit passing when unable to draw or meld and allow bluffing through discarding high-value cards to mislead opponents—adding an element of psychological strategy to gameplay.
